The Hotchkiss School
The Hotchkiss School is located in Lakeville, Connecticut and is a boarding school for grades 9-12 and a small number of post-graduates. Maria Harrison Bissell Hotchkiss founded the school in 1891 to prepare young men for Yale. It sat on 65 acres of open fields and several houses. The years have brought change to Hotchkiss with the decision to become a coeducational school. The campus of Hotchkiss is on 827 acres with academic and residential buildings, playing fields, green lawns, a working farm, freshwater lake and lovely vistas of the Berkshire Mountains. Hotchkiss by design is a medium sized school in a large school setting.
The first 50 boys that attended Hotchkiss were charged $600 for tuition. This was more than families could afford. Maria Hotchkiss decided to offer scholarship aid to deserving students. Many students have been helped throughout the years because of this policy. In early 1912 Hotchkiss recruited students from China. This played a part in recruiting international students from all parts of the world. Headmaster George Van Santvoord enabled students from Hotchkiss to study abroad by having the School join with the English-Speaking Union program. The students at Hotchkiss come from 28 countries and 5 to 10 students study abroad each year.
Hotchkiss began its first formal participation in minority student recruitments programs in the 1960s. The Hotchkiss connection with a program called Prep for Prep, help prepare minority student for academically demanding independent schools in the early 1980s. 39 percent of students at Hotchkiss identify themselves as students of color.
In 1996, Hotchkiss committed themselves to be involved in the environment. With over 500 acres of woods, two lakes, wetland, fields, brooks, and ponds on campus, learning about the environment begins the first day a new student arrives.
Hotchkiss has had many changes and experiences through the years but their mission has remained true: to provide an educational experience that is challenging yet supportive, broad but well informed.
The arts play an important role at Hotchkiss. All students are encouraged to participate with one year of art study required. They can choose music, dance, visual arts, theater, or photography. The art courses are designed to stretch the student’s creative boundaries.
The athletic program at Hotchkiss offers a variety of interscholastic, intramural and recreational sports. The students learn the importance of physical fitness and the principles of fair play and sportsmanship. Some of the many sports available to participate in are: field hockey, soccer, cross country, volleyball, football, and wrestling.
