Teens with eating disorders – Bulimia



Bulimia is a type of eating disorder. One of the main symptoms of bulimia is the person will eat a very large amount of food in a short period of time. Then they will do something to get rid of the food they just ate, this is called purging. This could include vomiting, exercising too much or using medicines such as laxatives to rid them of the food. Those with bulimia may binge because food makes them feel good and give them comfort, but eating large portions makes them feel like they are losing control. After a person will binge, they feel ashamed, guilty and afraid of gaining weight.

This is what causes them to purge. If some one with bulimia does not receive treatment, it can lead to serious, long term health problems. When they vomit, the acid in the mouth can cause tooth decay, gum disease and loss of tooth enamel. Also any kind of purging can lead to bone thinning, kidney damage, heart problems or even death. Will power alone can not over come bulimia. A person with bulimia needs treatment, this can help them to feel better and live a healthier life.

Although we may not know what causes eating disorders such as bulimia, they may be a mix of family history, social factors, and personality traits. A person may be more likely to have bulimia if other people in their family are obese or have an eating disorder. You may have a job or do a sport that puts stress on the body size, such as modeling or gymnastics. If you are a person that feels that you are never good enough and have to perfect all the time and worries a lot, you may be a candidate for bulimia. Also if you are dealing with a lot of stress in your live, such as a divorce, moving to a new town or school, or lost a loved one.

Bulimia usually starts in the teen years. It is mostly female who have bulimia, but some boys and men have it too. When it starts in the teen years, it can usually last into adulthood and therefore is a long term disorder. A person who has bulimia will binge on a regular basis and eat large amounts of food in a short period of time. When they are binging they feel out of control and feel unable to stop eating. This will them make them feel guilty and they will purge to get rid of the food and avoid weight gain.

As with all eating disorders, there is treatment available. There are some teen boarding schools that can help teens with this disorder. Parents will find relief when they choose to send their teen with bulimia to a teen boarding school. They will not only be safe, but the environment at these teen boarding schools will be such that the teen can receive the help they will need to manage their disorder.
