Indian Mountain School
Indian Mountain School is located in Lakeville, CT and is a coeducational junior boarding school for grades 6-9. Indian Mountain School provides a traditional education to promote moral growth and personal academic excellence. IMS teaches their students to have respect for learning, the environment and each other. The school community consists of many international students which make for a culturally diverse environment. At the heart of Indian Mountain School is their set of values: honestly, compassion, respect, and service. These values have served as a foundation for the school since the beginning. In 1922, the first headmaster was Francis Riggs and opened with eight young boys.
The academic program at IMS was developed to teach students to be an active and responsible participant in their learning. Students learn to gain confidence in themselves as they express themselves, defend their opinions and in public speaking. The academic program promotes study skills and reinforces good study habits. With writing, reading and math being the foundation of the student’s academics, they are given individual attention to help them succeed and become ready for future success.
Indian Mountain School has an athletic program that provides an outlet for students’ energy and works hand in hand with their daily classroom activities. The athletic program provides opportunities for all regardless of age, size or ability. They learn the meaning of fair play, cooperation, sportsmanship and love of the game. IMS offers over thirty teams to their students. They may participate in competitive soccer, football, cross country, and volleyball. In the winter, students may choose basketball, hockey, skiing, recreational snowboarding and squash. At the end of the school year students may be involved in, baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis and recreational outdoor programs. IMS has six playing fields and three all-weather tennis courts. They use their own gymnasium for basketball and their own squash courts. The ice hockey rink is located at The Hotchkiss School and the alpine training facilities available at Catamount Mountain.
The arts department focus is on creativity and the spirit of imagination. Students are encouraged to explore new ideas and themes and to develop their own creative methods. They offer film, drama, studio arts and music programs.
The motto for Indian Mountain School is life through service. The students are challenged to participate in community service projects in their local towns. They have participated in a walk to combat world hunger, collected food for the local food pantry by shooting hoops, and donated their own money to local animal shelters. The students also visit nearby nursing homes and hospitals and participate in the school-wide recycling program. Through service the students embrace the values of compassion and respect for others.
