About the School

Canterbury School is a co-educational independent college preparatory school for grades 9-12. Based on Catholic values, the school is proud that the students can experience a broad and challenging program in a small school setting. Located in New Milford, CT, the school was founded in 1915. The campus is small and provides the security and feel of a small community, where the students feel like they belong and everyone knows each other. They all come together at morning meeting, Mass in the Chapel of Our Lady, and sit-down dinners. They also have pep rallies, interscholastic games and annual events such as spring musical and graduation day.

Between the students day being filled with classes and sports, they also can choose to pursue they own interests through the many clubs and activities available. The school has a diverse student body where one can create bonds of friendship. Canterbury teaches students life skills such as time management and helps the students to becoming well-rounded individuals. The weekend’s can be filled with many activities such as going to the movie, trips to the Danbury Fair Mall, professional sports events, lectures, outdoor concerts and dances on or off campus. The goal is to have enough choices for the students on the weekends.

Canterbury students are involved in their local community. The students are encouraged to sponsor at least one type of community service for the year. Canterbury feels that the students can give back to their local, national, and global communities by giving service. Some of these service projects have been: visiting the local nursing home, mentoring at the public school, peer counseling or volunteering at the Hospital. At Easter time the Women of Canterbury donate Easter baskets to the local women’s shelter.

Canterbury has a fine Arts program and encourages the student to express themselves, whether it is through music, drama or visual arts. The teachers are artists and performers themselves so they have a lot of experience and can share their knowledge. Local professionals also come in to give private lessons in the music department. The facility has space for recordings, music practice, art exhibits and performances. They have a recording studio where students can create instrumental and choral recordings. The student’s art is displayed throughout the school.
