The Knox School
The Knox School is located in Saint James, NY and is a coeducational school for grades 7-12. The purpose of The Knox School is to inspire in each student a love of learning and the desire to continually develop the skills necessary to lead happy, confident, and successful lives. Core values are: integrity, kindness, courage, respect, responsibility and scholarship. The Knox School is a school rich in music and art, close to the cultural advantages of New York City and embodying progressive educational ideas and methods. Since is founding in 1904 the school has overcome many challenges. It has thrived in four subsequent locations, survived a devastating fire, changed its name from Miss Knox’s School for girls to The Knox School and had nine succeeding heads after Miss Knox. The beautiful campus rests on a small peninsula between Long Island Sound and Stony Brook Harbor, offering expansive waterfront views.
The heartbeat of any great boarding school is the close and often lifelong friendships that student form with each other and with their teachers. Knox student begin their day together in a community morning meeting then attend class, and join each other in a variety of athletics and activities. They attend dinner before returning “home” to their dorms. It is very much a family atmosphere where students can all know each other and have unlimited opportunities to get to know their teachers outside the classroom.
The athletic program at Know is on the rise where they offer many sports to become involved in such as: volleyball, soccer, cross country, tennis, crew, and more. Founded in 1914, the Equestrian Program at Knox is the oldest, continuous sports activity. The program is a 5-day per week program designed for students of all ages and abilities. Coupled with the other athletic endeavors at Knox, the Equestrian Program promotes Knox’s Core Values. Ninety-five percent of the riders in the past year were honor students and highly supportive and respectful of each other both in and out of the riding ring. Horses teach empathy, patience and discipline.
Visual Arts students are given the opportunity to show their work both on campus and in the local community. The possibilities for individuals to explore and learn in visual arts are endless. The performing arts classes give students the opportunity to participate in a variety of concerts, performances and productions each year or support the performers as members of the backstage, sound and lighting crew. The students have had field trips to The Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center and Times Square to attend Anything Goes on Broadway.
