Houghton Academy is a Christian, college-prep boarding and day school for grades 9-12. The school is located in Houghton, NY and was founded by Wesleyan Methodist evangelist Willard J. Houghton. He started out by traveling the Genesee valley inviting children to Sunday school. Because of his conversations with area church leaders, he formed his vision for a school. That the school that would serve as a “moral lighthouse” for a “dark world.” Wesleyan Methodist Seminary opened its doors and from the beginning was committed to a Christ-centered approach to schooling.
As the enrollment grew in the 1890’s the Seminary began offering post-secondary courses, which resulted in the founding of Houghton College. In 1955 the Seminary was renamed Houghton Academy.
Houghton Academy has a three-fold emphasis on head, heart, and hands. They encourage the students to put their knowledge and faith into action. They offer academic coursework, encourage students to become involved in sports, music, drama or art. Houghton believes that a good education should encompass more than just books and information.
The athletic program at Houghton Academy helps develop character. Team sports would include girl’s volleyball, basketball, boy’s soccer, basketball, and co-ed golf. There are many more teams to become a part of and students may choose to participate and enjoy Houghton’s downhill ski club. Houghton students also have access to a number of athletic facilities at nearby Houghton College. Some of the unstructured activities would include: cross-country skiing, hiking, biking or hunting.
Houghton Academy students come from many different faith backgrounds and different world religions. The staff and faculty at Houghton are committed to teaching and modeling Christianity. They do not force students to embrace the Truth of Scripture, but regularly ask student to think about their spiritual lives and standing. Students who are not interested in spiritual things are advised to consider other schools. If you are a Christian, you will have tremendous support for your Christian faith and practice.
