About the School
Located in Blairstown, NJ, Blair Academy is a co-ed college-preparatory boarding school for grades 9-12. Blair education is defined by seven principles. First: Bair knows their students. At Blair, the faculty will meet five times a year to discuss student progress and two faculty members are there every evening to help the boarding students. These faculty members are there to guide the students and to monitor the student’s academic progress. Second: The hallmark of the school is the community.
Daily life at Blair is a challenge and a student is given opportunities not only in the classroom, but outside the classroom as well. Blair has a diverse student body and they build the community to which many students remain in contact years after they graduate. Third: The heart of the Blair experience is the superior academic preparation. Blair feels the student has the responsibility for their academic progress. High standards are set and the goal is to aim to create in a student a life-long love of learning. Fourth: Happiness is beyond self. Blair helps the students to look beyond themselves and give service to others, learn leadership skills and have respect for others. Fifth: School size matters.
Residential matters. To Blair the size of their school is very critical. To have personal knowledge of each individual student, the community is small enough to form lasting relationships. With a variety of programs and the diversity of the students, Blair is committed to not only being a boarding school but also a day school with a boarding school experience. Sixth: Communicate, communicate, communicate. Blair feels that if you have open and thoughtful communication, anyone can be successful. They believe their students do their best work when everyone communicates, parents included.
Progress is possible when there is purposeful and effective communication. Seventh: What is important is the outcome. Blair gives students the opportunity to be their best and to achieve excellence. Students go on to many colleges and universities where they are given the opportunity and they are ready, to serve and lead.
Blair Academy is located on 423 hilltop acres adjacent to the village of Blairstown, New Jersey. John Insley Blair was a wealthy merchant and railroad tycoon. In 1848 he went to the Presbyterian Church and the town fathers of Blairstown to propose the founding of a small school.
Because the universal public education act was ten years away, the Blair Academy first educated the sons and daughters of local farmers and merchants. The school was coeducational until 1915, when it became an all boy’s school. They went back to coeducational in 1970 with great success. The student and faculty members are from a variety of economic, cultural, ethnic and educational backgrounds.
