Cotter Schools

Cotter Schools is located in Winona, MN and is a coeducational college preparatory, boarding high school for grades 9-12. It is a faith based Catholic community grounded on such values as respect for God, for others, and for ourselves, and honesty. Cotter believes that social and personal responsibility is an essential part of Christian life. They provide a well balanced arts education, sciences, and humanities program that encourage the students to pursue knowledge and personal growth. In a global society the students learn to be critical thinkers and life learners through use of modern technology. Cotter believes that through their many activities and commitment to student life, the students build relationships and learn that with their own efforts and commitment they can succeed in life. This is done by setting goals, personally and collectively making possible to achieve their individual level of excellence. Because Cotter is a faith based Catholic school, they stress the importance of a student’s spirituality, academics and student life. These three fundamental aspects of education help the student to develop into the whole person.

Cotter opened their doors in 1911 and was named for the diocese’s first bishop, Bishop Joseph Cotter. It was a school for boys at first and in the year 1952 became coeducational. Cotter through the years has always maintained their mission to spread the good news and to stay true to the traditions in Catholic education.

Each of the schools departments have a mission statement, the World Language Department believes that as a global community, the young people learn to appreciate others cultures, beliefs, traditions, and values. The students learn to communicate in a foreign language and this helps them to prepare to live in work in a global community.

The Religion Department believes that the students should love each other, learn for life, and live for Christ. The PE/Health Department has as their mission to promote a student’s physical, mental/emotional, social and spiritual health. In order for the student to have a high quality of life and be an effective member of the community, they are given the knowledge, attitudes and skills to make this possible.
