Deerfield Academy is located in Deerfield, MA and is a coeducational, college preparatory school for grades 9-12. A bill signed by Governor Samuel Adams to grant a charter for an academy in Deerfield was in the year 1797. The school was to be a place of instruction of young people and the promotion of religion, piety, and morality. In 1902 Mr. Frank L Boyden arrived to become the first headmaster. After serving for 66 years, Mr. Boyden retired and Mr. David M. Pynchon took over. Many headmasters served through out the years, strengthening the students and faculty. They all contributed in their own way with their skills and education.
The kitchen at Deerfield is legendary. They may have vegetarian cuisine, or prime rib, or chocolate cheesecake and always plenty to eat. One of the most important traditions at Deerfield is to sit down together for a meal. They stand for a moment in silence and give thanks, for friendship, for the food and for the blessings of the day. In the winter, cookies and cocoa are served in the main school building fireplace. After study hall, dorms are provided with snacks from the faculty.
Every student at Deerfield is required to participate in at least one co-curricular activity each term. These activities promote discipline and self awareness. No matter what activity the student may choose, they build new friendships and enrich the lives of those who participate. These activities could include: theater and dance, groups and clubs, intramural and Rec sports, interscholastic teams and squash, hockey, swimming and diving, basketball, skiing, cross country, football, soccer, volleyball and water polo.
Located close to Greenfield, Deerfield students are able to go to town to shop or have a weekend meal. There are five colleges 20 minutes south of Deerfield, Amherst, Smith, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and UMass. These college towns provide many cultural and intellectual resources with galleries, bookstores, coffee houses and movie theaters.
Academic integrity and honesty is very important at Deerfield. The bond of trust between the students and teachers are at the core of academic integrity. Plagiarism and misuse of computers is a serious breach of academic integrity.
