Gould Academy

Gould Academy is located at the eastern edge of the White Mountains in Bethel, Maine. It is a coeducational school for grades 9-12 with the emphasis on college preparation. Gould helps prepare motivated students for college and helps them to become good citizens, to be independent thinkers and go on in life to live with purpose, action, excellence and compassion. Because Gould can recognize that all students are different, they are able to meet each students needs by the small classroom size, dedicated faculty and an approach to teaching and learning that makes it possible to help each student as they continue with their academics and social development. Gould offers a challenging core curriculum that prepares the students for college or whatever they choose to do in the future. The students have the opportunity to use a Laptop through the One to One Laptop Initiative. They challenge their students to try new things so they can discover what their passions are. Gould believes that where there is risk, there is reward and they support their students all along the way.

The arts at Gould give students the opportunity to discover and develop their talents. If a student is interested in the performing arts they can participate in music and vocals to theater and dance. The musicians have classes in theory, music history, digital music production and with various ensembles, voice and instrument lessons there are many options to choose from. There are many opportunities to perform, such as the spring musical and special events.

Gould has a wonderful athletic department which offers the opportunity to build their character through dedication, teamwork, and competition. Some of the sports available are: mountain biking, lacrosse, rock climbing, skateboarding, equestrian and ski patrol, tennis, softball, baseball, golf, hiking, running, cycling and more. Gould believes that the students need to participate in a sport or activity each trimester.

Students come to Gould from all around the world to learn and share with each other and teachers creating friendship to last a life time. The community of students, faculty, and staff provide a sense of unity and camaraderie that is hard to find elsewhere. Gould students learn to get along with others, to learn about themselves and the world in which they live. Each fall, students look forward to Mountain Day which is a time when the whole community takes the day off and hikes to the nearby Tumbledown Mountain. In the winter, the students hike the snow-covered upper field. When a student first arrives at Gould, they are guided into the woods and waterways of western Maine. Gould has many other traditions that have lasted nearly two centuries.
