It was founded in 1949 and provides a full range of opportunities for students. The school has two campuses on a 200-acre area at the foot of the Kohala Mountains. HPA has many unique courses and activities that make use of the Hawaiian geographical setting and gives students a strong sense of the Hawaiian culture. Some of these courses and activities are: marine science field studies, sea turtle research, scuba certification and more. They also offer programs in the visual and performing arts as well as an athletic program. HPA believes in the student’s ability to be competent learners, complex and perceptive thinkers, communicators, responsible individuals, wholesome young men and women and to be culturally aware. HPA has a diverse enrollment of students from all over the world.
HPA has provided an exceptional learning environment for students since it opened it doors. Living on campus, students enjoy an extended family or “ohana” as they all share their warmth and gracious spirit of aloha. The live in faculty offer adult companionship and guidance. The seniors at HPA act as “big brothers” and “big sisters.” They provide college counseling to address the needs of each student. They offer Advanced Placement Preparation with coursed in Art History, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, English Language and Composition and more.
HPA has an active athletic program where students may participate in co-curricular activities each day. Some of the sports available are: softball, volleyball, track and field, water polo, tennis, golf and more. Students are also encouraged to participate in the Honolulu Marathon. In the summer, HPA offers sports camps where students may take swim lessons, receive tennis and equestrian instruction.
Just opened in 2009-2010, HPA has a new learning space, the Energy Lab. Students learn about energy, how it is generated and how they can conserve energy. They use the Lab to feature video teleconferencing, open creative zones, and hand-on workshops.
HPA is proud of their Performing Arts Center that house 360 people and has a proscenium style stage, a sprung dance floor, backstage dressing rooms, class rooms, shop area, two costume rooms and a rehearsal dance floor.
