The Ethel Walker School
The Ethel Walker School is located in Simsbury, CT and is a school for girls in grades 9-12. Founded in 1911 by Ethel Walker, the school started with ten girls. Ethel Walker was a Bryn Maur graduate and she felt that the world was changing and she wanted to start a school where young women could prepare for college and create a foundation for lifelong learning. She felt her school should be more than a “finishing school” so it became a school with a challenging academic program. Ethel Walker believed in a sound body/sound mind approach to learning. There were many forms of exercise including walking and horseback riding. From the start the school was involved in producing plays.
Ethel Walker’s vision has become a reality with her school.
The girls at Ethel Walker come from a diverse community, who are dedicated to the arts, athletics, wellness, scholarship and service. The girls enjoy new friendships and learn to lead with confidence, integrity, courage and conviction. Walker’s provide their students with a safe environment to learn to be leaders. Everyone at Walker’s has a sense of pride for themselves and in their school. Educational excellence happens when students learn that pride and humility intersect in their everyday life. They have pride in their academics, pride in their heritage, race, ethnicity, or opinions. Yet the students have the humility to know that they need to contribute to the world and make a difference. Walker’s is a top notch college preparatory school for girls and in order for a girl to graduate they must pass the entrance exam for Bryn Mawr College.
