George School is located in Newtown, PA and is a coeducational boarding school for grades 9-12. The Quaker tradition is at the core of George School, where the students learn to treasure learning and use it to benefit a diverse world. The Core Values at George School provide for the students many opportunities to grow. Transformative Teaching and Learning is a relationship between teachers and students. It is a combination of example, mutual respect, and personal commitment. The environment at George School is such that teachers challenge their students to hold themselves to high standards and to be humble and develop lifelong habits of scholarship and intellectual curiosity. Personal Integrity is also a core value at George school and “let your life speak” is a George Fox phrase, the school’s founder. The Quaker values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, service and stewardship provide a foundation for students to build lives of personal integrity. Students build habits of reflection by meeting for worship and learn to honor the Light of God in everyone. George School is very diverse and everyone has the opportunity to appreciate the differences in each other and how everyone can come together for the pursuit of the common good. Everyone is responsible for themselves and each other. At George School they practice good stewardship in their daily actions and decisions.
Founded in 1893 by Quakers, a religious group, George School doesn’t try to turn their students into Quakers, but the emphasis is on the individual and their spiritual basis that contributes to their decisions, activities and relationships. George School takes seriously the “do unto others” as a serious challenge rather that a good idea. The service work that students do at George School is just a part of life and they cheerfully accept this responsibility. George School has a different “religious service”, they meet together to worship but it is done in silence. It is a time for quiet reflection and if students feel the need to share they are allowed to do so.
George School has a variety of extra curricular activities to choose from. Whether it is visual arts or performing arts, the arts allows students to express themselves and learn enjoy something through hard work and struggle.
The athletic program at George School provides an opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of sports. The George School stresses that all performance and coaching is done in the service of the team. Players support, trust and play hard for each other. This provides a lifelong friendship with others and a work ethic they can take with them to college.
