About the School
Buffalo Seminary was founded in 1851 and is Western New York’s only independent college preparatory school for girls. It was first known as The Buffalo Female Academy, but in 1889 the name was changed. The school was founded by parents who wanted an education for their daughters just as their sons were receiving in boy’s schools. Buffalo Seminary is commonly known as Sem.
The girls learn and grow in an environment that has vibrant teaching creative engagement, active learning, and community spirit. The classes are small so the girls can receive individual attention. The school also encourages cooperation and leadership. Sem enrolls international students giving all the opportunity to learn and appreciate different ethic backgrounds and be comfortable with that diversity. The girls are encouraged to pursue patterns of rigorous thought, fruitful reflection, and clear expression.
The academic honor code at Sem requires respect for artistic and intellectual property. The honor system requires the students to not receive any aid during a test, to not copy text or let another student copy their work. Social Honor code requires honesty in all matters, courtesy, consideration for others and respect for each others differences. A violation of the social honor system could include: harassing or physically harming another person, expressing any form of prejudice, lying, cheating, stealing, smoking on school grounds, or being absent from school without appropriate permission.
The athletic program at Buffalo Seminary puts emphasize on excellence, commitment, participation and the cultivation of the whole person. The student will learn sportsmanship, teamwork, responsibility and dedication. As the students are involved in the athletic program, it gives them a sense of belonging and helps the student to achieve their personal best.
The Fine and Performing Arts Program at Buffalo Seminary gives the girls a chance to study the history and philosophy of artistic expression and to perform through art, music or theatre. The theatre department has two major shows each year as well as the music department. The music department features the Ensemble and Glee Club.
