Fryeburg Academy is a coeducational school for grades 9-12 and is located in Fryeburg, ME. Founded in 1792 the school was first known as a fitting school for Bowdoin College, focusing on teacher training. For a short time the school was to become a medical school, but that soon gave way to the traditional courses in preparation for college. Fryeburg Academy is set in a classic New England village in the foothills of the White Mountain. It is close to lakes, the ocean, rivers and many acres of the White Mountain National Forest, making it possible to have many outdoor activities every season of the year. The local resort town of North Conway is rich in culture and entertainment and provides many learning opportunities for the students. The Academy believes that if the school community is strong, this provides the best conditions for students to learn and grow. They strive to create an environment that promotes respect, tolerance, cooperation and to prepare students to be responsible citizens.
The academic program at Fryeburg is challenging and they provide the student with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in college or the workplace. They work closely with the students to develop their educational goals. They also work closely with parents, advisors and teachers who are involved in the students decisions. Fryeburg Academy offers many Honor courses as well as Advanced Placement Courses.
The Fine Arts Program at Fryeburg offer many opportunities for students to discover their talents. In music the students have performed at many events including school musicals, plays, parades, reunions, concerts, games and competitions. Chorus and band are offered as a class and other music groups are offered by audition. The Fine Arts program gives students the chance to discover and foster their talents. The Fine Arts faculty encourages original expression of one self. Classes include: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and theater and music theory. The students are given the opportunity to be a part of the school yearbook process. The Theater courses give students the opportunity to be involved in musicals and compete in state one act play competitions.
The athletic program at Fryeburg plays a vital role in the educational process for each student. Through athletic competition the students learn to develop not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Some of the athletic opportunities that Fryeburg offer are: cheerleading, cross country running, field hockey, football, golf, mountain biking, soccer, skiing, basketball ice hockey, wrestling, baseball, cycling, Lacrosse, softball, tennis and track and field.
